Sleeping Beauty Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

When I was little, I loved Sleeping Beauty. A lot of it came down to the fact that we are both blonde. Not much, but it was something. It helped that she had the prettiest dress. No, not the one most people think of, the one this pattern is for. My favorite is the grey dress she wears in the woods. I do plan on making that one. It's my favorite after all!

Materials

  • Skin- Loops and Threads Impeccable (aran)

  • Hair/Crown- Caron Simply Soft (sunshine)

  • Dark Pink- Red Heart Super Saver (perfect pink)

  • Light Pink- Lion Brand something or other, of course there is no label (wool-ease in blush heather looks just about right)

  • Gold Embroidery Floss- DMC #729

  • Black Embroidery Floss

  • White Embroidery Floss

  • Crochet Hook C (2.75 mm)

  • Thick Embroidery Hook

  • Stuffing

If making the blue dress version of Sleeping Beauty, replace the pinks with the following blues:

  • Dark Blue- Red Heart Super Saver (light periwinkle)

  • Light Blue- Red Heart Sport (blue jewel), held double

This doll is worked from the top of the head in continuous rounds down until the legs split. Then one leg is worked at a time. Arms, hair, and crown are made separately and attached afterward. The skirt is picked up at the waist and worked to the hem. Eyes and necklace are embroidered directly onto doll. Aurora measures about 6 inches tall. Using a different yarn weight, using a different crochet hook size, and personal tension will alter that.

Head and Body

R1- using aran, make magic circle with 6 sc, pull tight

R2- 2 sc in each stitch around (12 st)

Using the dark pink, start the right leg. Join in the back next to the left leg, leaving a 6 inch tail at the beginning. This is used to sew up the crotch at the end.

R24- sc in next st, change to aran, sc BLO in each stitch around (12 st)

R25 to R27- sc in each stitch around (12 st)

Again, end R27 at the middle of the back, even if it means not doing the last stitch or adding a stitch.

R29- st in each stitch around (12 st)

R30- dec by sc2tog around (6 st)

Skirt

The skirt is crocheted directly onto Sleeping Beauty's body using the loops at her waist (there should be 18 st). These rounds are not continuous; they are joined with a slip stitch at the end of each) Hold the doll with her head down, feet up. Using the dark pink yarn, join at the back middle, ch 2.

R1- *2 dc in same stitch, dc in next 2 stitches* rep to end, slip to join (24 st)

R2- ch 2, *dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in same stitch* rep to end, slip to join (30 st)

Arms, make 2

R4- change to light pink, sc in each stitch around (8 st)

R5 to R8- sc in each stitch around (8 st)

R9- change to aran, sc2tog, sc in next 2 stitches, sc2tog, sc in next stitch, slip in last stitch, BO leaving a 6 inch tail

Crown, make 2

Using gold, ch 13.

Starting in second chain from hook, slip stitch, sc in next 3 stitches, hdc, dc, ch3, dc, hdc, sc in next 3 stitches, slip, BO leaving a 10 inch tail

Once both crown pieces are made, sew them wrong sides together. Use the gold embroidery thread to add some details to the crown. I did this to differentiate the crown from her hair because they use the same yarn.

Skirt Triangles

Using light blue yarn, ch 21

Starting in the second chain from hook, slip stitch and hdc in same stitch, *dc, [tc, ch3, tc] in same stitch, dc, hdc and sc in same stitch* rep 3 more times, BO leaving a 10 inch tail

*Note: on my original pink version, I actually embroidered all the triangles. I don't recommend it. It took way longer and doesn't necessarily look better.

Hair

I didn't make this pattern myself. I followed the pattern for Ariel's hair from Chiara Cremon on Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/little-mermaid-amigurumi-6

*Note: it appears that this pattern was updated at some point between when I made Sleeping Beauty and now. It used to be that the wig was made of two stranded layers. Following the new pattern, I would just add one more strand that is 35 ch long and omit the second piece that makes Ariel's bangs. Don't sew all the strands together. Just sew them one at a time to Aurora's head. When sewing, corkscrew the long one to make her bangs. If I get the time, I'll come back and edit this to more accurately reflect what I actually did with my dolls.

Collar

Using white, chain as many as you need to go along the entire neckline and shoulders. Leave an 8 inch tail.

Once all your pieces are made, it's just a matter of sewing them on and embroidering a couple details. I always try to hide my knots and tails within the doll. For the embroidery on the face I always hide it under the hair. For the tails at the feet and things on the skirt, I hide them in the body and usually tie the knot in the little hole between the legs. This is the order I followed when I made Aurora:

  1. Stuff the head, body, legs, and arms.

  2. Sew on the arms to R15 or 16, whichever you prefer. I did R15

  3. Embroider eyes and nose (and mouth/eyebrows if you choose) using embroidery thread and a small bit of aran yarn for nose. I do the eyes first and then the nose.

  4. Sew triangles to skirt. Sew along both the top and bottom edges.

  5. Sew white chain to neckline to create the collar.

  6. Embroider the necklace using the gold yarn.

  7. Sew the hair piece to her head. Make sure not to leave any bald spots.

  8. Sew the crown to the top of her head right behind the bangs.

  9. Using the tails on the feet, sew the hole shut.

  10. Double check that everything looks good. Add more stuffing to the body if it needs more, and sew the crotch shut. Do you best to hide the knot and draw the tail a long way through the body before snipping it.

And she's done! As you are making your Sleeping Beauty, please reach out to me in the comments if anything needs to be cleared up. This pattern is written from my notes, so hopefully it makes sense to more than just me. Please share this with anyone you know that might need a little Sleeping Beauty in their life!

When I made that cute little striped hat, I also made this. The zebra lovey was actually the start of it all. I'm really glad to share...
